If You or Your Boss Thinks Social Media is a Fad, Watch This Video

social media revolution 2009 video How I Discovered This Video Offers Another Proof of the Power of Social Media

SW Florida online marketing maven and real estate professional, Chris Griffith, clued me into this cool and compelling video which does a terrific job of dispelling doubts about the power and impact of social media. So, it’s only natural to share it on my blog.

But, there’s more. As I was about to simply post the video, I realized that the Facebook alert from Chris was a metaphor for the fast growing impact of social media to connect people, businesses, and concepts.

Here’s what I mean:

  • until just over a year ago I had never heard of Chris but discovered her through her blog on ActiveRain.
  • I was impressed enough with what she was doing that I wrote an article about the effectiveness of her online content marketing approach: Chris Griffith Proves a Blog with Personality Makes for Great Content Marketing
  • since she was an early and prolific user of Twitter, I then invited her to do a guest post on Content Marketing Today: Want to Connect Your Content, Your Projects, and Your Life to the World?  Her Twitter moniker, @twitterzilla, reflects her quirky independent personality.
  • I have also become a regular reader of her more consumer oriented blog, Life in Bonita Springs.
  • On Facebook, we and hundreds of our respective Facebook friends have learned a lot about what each of us is doing and thinking. In this way, I get links to what Chris has written about real estate for the Naples Daily News–as well as touching information about the challenges facing her senior citizen dog, LBD. It means that I have come to know her and trust her more quickly than I would have in a traditional business or social situation.
  • I had never met Chris personally until several months ago. Where did I meet her? At a social media coffee, of course. Thus, the loop is completed from online social media to an in-person social event.  I should mention that the social media coffees have grown so much in the past few months that they are starting to overwhelm their local coffee shop venue. Of course, our group, Coffee and Social Media of Naples has its own Facebook page.  And, so it goes.

The social media bottom line: I saw Chris’ Facebook note about the video only because each of us had connected via our web of social media activities. Five years ago, neither one of us knew what social media was. Today, it is a fundamental component of our respective marketing strategies. I believe that social media must become a fundamental part of your organization’s marketing strategies as well.

If you’re still skeptical and think that Chris Griffith and I are just outliers in the marketing universe, invest a few minutes to watch the Social Media Revolution video–and then feel free to share it via the links at the bottom of this article:
