Words and Pictures Interestingly and Inextricably Intertwined
We all know the cliché, “A picture is worth a thousand words.” Of course, so many clichés have persisted so long because they contain so much truth. In fact, if you strip out well-chosen, relevant images from a website, you wind up with a dry husk that has little appeal to busy Web travelers. So, maybe a picture is worth 10,000 web visitors or more.
Here’s something that’s even better: striking and memorable images that are paired with words of wisdom. Thanks to Jess Sloss of Socialsquared for uncovering the unique work of Will Lion.
Here are two of my favs:
On this beautiful, busy Friday, take a break and view Jess’s top picture picks or Will’s Flickr images. You’ll get a chance to think a bit about stuff that matters in many different contexts.

Hi Newt:
These are beautiful images. The words are provocative. But how is this content “marketing?” What is the intent of the content? What is the point? What action is expected or requested? I see it more as art than as marketing.
Bill,
I was in a pictorial mood. Content marketing temporarily took a back seat.
But, I do think intergrating text and pictures can make for a powerful design element within a content-rich website.

Pictures normally work better than words. Mainly because you leave a lot on a viewer’s imagination and interpretation of it. Contexual relevance is the key though if a picture would actually deliver the message you want it to convey. I enjoyed your post Newt, been away for a while.
@Will Waites, I think Will Lion’s Pictures are a great example of Content marketing. The intent of creating something worth linking to, talking about, sharing and discussing is an incredibly valuable one. Will has seen thousands of visitors to his work and built his brand around his creative matching of pictures to words.
I think the best marketing is often not seen as marketing at all. By creating something that induces an emotional response, you’ve achieved a whole other level of connection with your target market.
Thanks for sharing Newt.
