You may have trouble keeping up with all the social  media networking sites that find different ways of aggregating and engaging groups of people typically described as “friends.”  You’re probably also skeptical about your company’s ability to leverage sites like Facebook, MySpace, and LinkedIn to generate leads and to drive sales.

If so, here’s a great example of a small company that put Facebook to work that comes courtesy of a terrific content marketing site, Kari Rippetoe’s The Caffeinated Blog.

As a new user to Facebook, Kari stumbled upon an old high school classmate, Dustin Meyer, who was successfully promoting his photography business that specifically targeted wedding photography and high school graduation portraits.  As Kari indicates, “For his wedding photography services, Dustin targets brides in the 22-35 age group and their mothers, with upper-middle income and a wedding budget of about $25-50K.  For senior portraits, he targets students whose parents have an annual income of $200K+.”   In other words, he knows exactly who he is going after.

e also cleverly bypasses parents on the social networking site by appealing directly to graduating high schoolers who are increasingly gravitating toward Facebook. He takes advantage of the birthday feature to send e-mail gift cards for portraits and then posts images as a portfolio on Facebook.

His results: The majority of his senior portrait business is now coming from Facebook.

This is a great example of using social media marketing that you can emulate:

  • precisely define your target market
  • determine where they are congregating online
  • create relevant and compelling content for that target audience
  • generate offers they cannot refuse to promote your business
  • display the positive results from your customers within the social media site

You should explore The Caffeinated Blog.  It’s full of terrific stuff.

Also take a look at Dustin Myers Facebook page and his website to see how much you can learn. You’ll be impressed by what he is doing.
