5 Keys to a Successful Small Business Website

By Newt Barrett | On August 29, 2008

5advise home page Fifth Avenue Advisors Illustrates the Power of the Web to Connect with Your Customers.

This Naples-based company is a boutique firm with decades of experience behind them. As their top 2008 marketing priority, they decided to pursue a content marketing strategy online with a brand-new website, www.5advise.com.

I was fortunate enough to work with the principals of the firm in helping to build a content and customer focused website that focuses on solutions to significant challenges that business owners face at a critical time in the life of their companies.

Here the five Keys that make their website so effective:

  1. They have made to the website all about their clients. Although they do talk about their capabilities, that information comes only after they have delivered relevant and valuable content that emphasizes the positive outcomes their clients are seeking.
  2. They focus on what their clients want to achieve as a result of working with a company such as theirs. For example, their tagline at the very top of the website is: “when it’s time to turn your business into your future.”  This reflects their deep understanding of their target market which consists of successful small to medium-sized business owners who are exploring the sale of their companies.  They know that these owners will need help in selling their business–and will frequently need help investing the resulting wealth in the best interests of their family.
  3. They offer a lot of intrinsically valuable free information that helps their web visitors understand the issues involved when they sell their business and when it is time to invest the proceeds.  Even if these visitors never do business with Fifth Avenue Advisors, they will come away much more knowledgeable about handling their situation and with a very positive impression about the company.
  4. For those visitors who want to pursue doing business with the company, the site provides well-crafted information to help in that buying decision. Visitors learn enough about both the M&A and wealth management components of the business to have a high level of confidence in their capabilities.  The website also engenders a high level of trust in doing business with Fifth Avenue Advisors based on its content and customer-centric focus.
  5. The website is both visually appealing and very easy to navigate.  The company makes it simple to find exactly what visitors are looking for.  They can choose to learn more about the basics of selling a business–or they can go directly to pages that talk about the company’s capabilities.  In terms of design, the site carries a nautical theme throughout which reinforces the idea of navigating through the complexities of selling a business or managing newfound wealth.

It is worth noting that the website was built using WordPress and shows how flexible and customizable WordPress can be for small companies who need to create and maintain a compelling online presence.

If you are considering transforming your small business website with a much greater degree of customer and content focus, you can learn a lot from www.5advise.com.

    Content is really good – “you” focused”. Found some issues with flickering navigation and also many 404 errors;

    Links on bottom of /selling-your-business/is-it-time-to-sell/ are directing to your demo test server: sitetwo.voyagertestsites.com/

    This is also true on many other pages as well.
