Joe wins “Custom Media Innovator of the Year” from ABM

joe pulizzi_obrien award Custom Publishing is the progenitor of content marketing.  Think of all those airline magazines, for example.  They are produced by custom publishing companies and represent both a marketing and a revenue enhancer. But they, and most of their custom publishing brethren, are basically add-ons within much larger advertising and marketing campaigns.  Joe took it to the next level.

Joe Pulizzi, who was a long-time custom publishing veteran at Penton media, was one of the first to recognize that content creation should be a core component within every company’s marketing arsenal.  As he and I put it in our book, Get Content. Get Customers., marketers must begin to think of themselves as publishers by creating content that is relevant and valuable for their customers.

Thus, in his role as a content marketing guru, Joe has effectively strengthened the role that custom publishing–and custom publishing companies–can and should play within every organization’s marketing strategy.

In a speech at the American Business Media awards, describing why Joe won the award, Anne O’Brien of Source Media, said: “Joe has been the true evangelist for the custom media industry. Whether through his speaking, the book, the Junta42 educational site, or Junta42’s new content matching product, Joe is taking the industry where it needs to go.

In his Junta42 blog post, Joe emphasized that the award reinforced the importance of a content marketing focus for custom publishing:

“The majority of businesses out there still do not realize the impact they can make on their customers and prospects by communicating valuable, relevant and compelling content.  Doing this on a consistent basis and becoming “part” of the conversation (and not just “talking at” customers) is marketing for the present and future.”

Congratulations Joe on your well-deserved recognition as a content marketing and custom publishing evangelist par excellence!
